Why did you start CrossFit?
I needed to break out of a routine that I was doing at a Globo Gym that wasn’t getting me much results and my Cross Country Coach (Dennis) had recommended me to do CrossFit. He felt that I had the grit to take it head on and just pictured me liking it. I started out without any coaching and just using the crossfit.com website to help get my WODs in. I then joined up with an affiliate gym soon after when I found out Dennis had opened one up in Salem. From that point on I was never the same haha.
CrossFit Level 1 Trainer
I started playing Football (aka Soccer) when I was 3 years old and pretty much played it up until my Freshman year of college. It was a full-time job practically growing up as I played club soon after the Town League and High School seasons had ended and also trained for being a hopeful in the Olympics. I did Track and Field and raced in the 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m, 4 x 100 m Relay, Distance Medley and Triple Jump (I was the shortest kid but placed 7th overall in the state haha). I also do surfing, stand up paddleboarding, snowboarding, skiing, rock climbing, rugby and kayaking to name a few.
How did you get here?
I had left my old affiliate due to some personal reasons, but for the most part I wanted to look for a place where community was greater than outdoing the person next to you in the WODs. I was recommended by Dennis to check Five Plus out and ever since day one of joining I have loved it. I feel at home with everyone and everybody is so great to work with when coaching. I get fired up anytime I walk in because I am just happy to see everybody kicking butt and having fun no matter how tough the WOD is.
What is your favorite movement:
Back squats. Anything lower body really haha.
What is your Goat (least favorite):
It was rope climbs, but I went on to practice them to get over my fear of heights. I say it’s now the Atlas ball. They are brutal!
What is your PLUS?
This is a tough one. I think my PLUS would be teaching as I have coached athletes in either football or track and field before CrossFit to better themselves and discover the possibilities that are out there to improve not only themselves, but their lifestyle as well. From the years spent training and going for the Olympics as my ultimate goal it really forced a perspective on me that I want others to see as well. It’s basically telling people who say “They can’t” to change that attitude of thought into “They can” because through hard work and dedication they can achieve whatever they want. It doesn’t have to be perfect. As long as you try it and not give up, you can succeed.
Why are you excited to be a part of this?
CrossFit has changed me as a whole to being a better person in and out of the box. I love being with a community of people who are practically like family to me and working alongside with them while coaching and seeing them grow in areas that they felt like they couldn’t is the most rewarding thing ever.
Favorite Sports Team:
Chelsea Football Club. GO BLUES!
What do you sing in the shower:
Any B.B. King song
“Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up.” ~ Bruce Wayne, Batman
Something that surprises people about you:
I guess one thing is when I am competing I turn into a whole other person that people just don’t expect, and not in a malicious way haha. I think people don’t realize how serious I will get when it’s time to throw down. I go from being laid back and smiles to very serious and, as some former team mates of mine would say, “a beast” haha. When it’s over though I go back to my normal self which throws a lot of people off. It’s amusing to see the reactions haha.
The James Bond Series or the Bourne Identity Series.
Blue, but I notice I wear a lot of red and black, so I guess those too.
Schneider Weisse, Hoegaarden or Guiness
